U.S. Housing Secretary Scott Turner and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem have signed an agreement called the “American Housing Programs for American Citizens.” This agreement aims to stop taxpayer money from being used to help illegal immigrants and instead make sure it goes to American citizens who need housing help.
The agreement means HUD will have a staff member to help with checking who qualifies for housing programs. They want to make sure that only American citizens benefit from these programs. Secretary Turner said it's important to focus on helping American citizens, especially during the housing crisis.
Secretary Noem mentioned that many illegal immigrants have been receiving benefits that should go to Americans, and this practice will come to an end. There are about 9 million people in public housing without proper checks on their eligibility. HUD will also ensure that those who are in the country illegally do not receive assistance from HUD-funded programs.
